As a neurodivergent affirming Special Education Advocate, I understand that there is natural variation in human cognitive function. I believe that neurodivergent people are essential in our society and deserve respect. I reject the idea that neurodivergent people are in need of “fixing.” In fact, I believe that if your child is facing challenges in school it is the environment that needs fixing, not your child.
With that in mind, my goal is to work with your school district to develop strength-based goals for your child’s IEP (Individual Education Plan) and/or BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan). These goals are built around what your student can do and how the team can utilize these abilities. These strengths and abilities are then thoughtfully integrated into IEP goals & objectives.
It is important to include your student in this process as helping students identify and leverage their strengths, interests, and preferences can lead to more self-awareness and self-advocacy.
